Inflationskennzahlen

Inflationskennzahlen are statistical indicators used to measure and describe the rate of inflation within an economy. Inflation refers to a general increase in the prices of goods and services in an economy over a period of time, leading to a fall in the purchasing value of money.

Several key Inflationskennzahlen exist, with the most prominent being the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the Producer Price Index (PPI). The CPI measures the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services. This basket typically includes items like food, housing, apparel, transportation, medical care, and recreation. The CPI is widely used as a proxy for the cost of living and influences wage adjustments, pension benefits, and economic policy decisions.

The PPI, on the other hand, measures the average change over time in the selling prices received by domestic producers for their output. It tracks price changes from the perspective of the seller, encompassing goods at various stages of production, from raw materials to finished products. The PPI is often considered a leading indicator for the CPI, as changes in producer prices can eventually be passed on to consumers.

Other less common Inflationskennzahlen may include measures focusing on specific sectors or broader measures like the GDP deflator, which reflects price changes for all domestically produced goods and services. Central banks and governments closely monitor these figures to assess economic stability and formulate monetary and fiscal policies.
