Infields

Infields, in the context of sports, refers to the area of a field of play that is closest to the spectators and often contains the main playing surface. This is particularly relevant in sports like baseball, softball, and cricket. In baseball and softball, the infield is the diamond-shaped area enclosed by the four bases. It includes the pitcher's mound, the bases themselves, and the area where infielders typically position themselves to field batted balls.

The infield in baseball and softball is usually covered with a different type of grass than the outfield, often a finer, shorter cut to allow for faster play and easier ground ball handling. In cricket, the infield is a broader term referring to the area within the boundary rope and closer to the batsmen, encompassing the pitch where bowling occurs. The characteristics of the infield, such as its surface condition and slope, can significantly influence the bounce and speed of the ball, thereby affecting the strategies employed by players. In some sports, like soccer or American football, while there isn't a specifically designated "infield" in the same way, the central area of the field is often colloquially referred to as such, implying its importance in controlling the game.
