Industrioljer

Industrioljer, or industrial oils, refer to a broad category of lubricants and insulating fluids used in machinery and industrial systems. They are designed to reduce friction, protect moving parts, transfer heat, and, in some cases, provide electrical insulation. The term is commonly used in Scandinavian languages and encompasses several subtypes that differ in base oils and performance characteristics.

The main classes of industrioljer include mineral-based oils, synthetic oils, and bio-based or ester-based oils. Mineral oils are refined petroleum products that offer reliable lubrication across a wide temperature range. Synthetic oils, such as polyalphaolefins and esters, provide superior thermal stability and longer service life in demanding applications. Bio-based oils, including vegetable oil and ester formulations, emphasize renewability and often offer improved biodegradability and lower environmental impact. Within these families, there are specific formulations for hydraulic fluids, gear oils, compressor oils, turbine oils, and cutting or metalworking fluids, as well as insulating transformer oils used in electrical equipment.

Key properties for industrioljer include viscosity and viscosity index, oxidation and thermal stability, pour point, flash point, demulsibility, wear protection, and foaming tendency. Additives may be included to enhance anti-wear protection, corrosion inhibition, antioxidant performance, and rust prevention. The choice of industriolje depends on equipment design, operating temperature, load, and compatibility with seals and metals.

Standards and safety guidelines cover labeling, handling, storage, and environmental impact. Regulations often address toxicity, flammability, spill response, and recyclability, while industry standards classify oils by viscosity grades and performance criteria. Environmental considerations increasingly favor biodegradable and low-toxicity formulations, particularly where spills or leaks pose ecological risks.
