Industrijski

Industrijski is an adjective used in several South Slavic languages to describe something related to industry. It is applied to processes, products, spaces and policies associated with industrial activity, as well as to design and equipment intended for industry. Common languages include Croatian, Bosnian, Serbian, Slovenian and Macedonian; the Latin-script form is industrijski, and the Cyrillic form is индустријски.

Etymology: The term derives from industrija (industry) with the adjectival suffix -ski. This formation is common in these languages. In English, the cognate is industrial, from Latin industria via French industrie.

Usage examples: industrijski dizajn (industrial design); industrijski pogon or industrijska zona (industrial plant or industrial zone); industrijski standard (industrial standard); industrijska politika (industrial policy). The phrase can modify nouns for equipment, architecture, logistics and planning that are oriented toward manufacturing or heavy industry.

Regional notes: While industrijski is standard in Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian, Slovenian and Macedonian, other languages use different terms for “industrial.” In Russian the equivalent is industrijal’nyi (индустриальный); in Polish przemysłowy; in Bulgarian индустриален. Recognizing the local form is important for correct usage in technical writing and everyday language.
