Steps in index calculation usually involve: defining the scope and units; selecting a base period and weighting scheme; collecting time‑series data; computing item-level indices; and aggregating with weights to form an overall index. Chain-linking updates the index by using the previous period as a new base, maintaining continuity in long time series.

Applications include measuring inflation, adjusting wages and contracts, price or cost tracking for households and firms, and facilitating real growth analyses. The method chosen affects interpretation; fixed-base indices suffer substitution bias when relative prices change, while chain-linked indices mitigate some of this bias but may introduce volatility at the base changes.

Seasonal adjustment and quality change are common refinements to improve comparability. Data quality, item coverage, and weighting choices are important considerations in indexberäkningar.
