Indenterilla

Indenterilla is a proposed musical opera by Francis Poulenc, a French composer, and can be considered a companion piece to his earlier work, Dialogues des Carmélites. The project was initiated in 1937 but stalled due to the composer's war-time commitments.

Indenterilla was intended to have two main sections - the first would explore the theme of speaking trees in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, and the latter would feature characters from Poulenc's own play, Les Mamelles de Tirésias. The work was going to be an attempt to follow in the footsteps of Shakespeare and make an operatic piece with talking trees as the main characters.

Poulenc began writing the opera before World War II, but because of his involvement in the French resistance, the piece was set aside. An audio recording from 1939 does provide some evidence of the musical ideas Poulenc was working with during that time.

The libretto was composed by Bernard Chartove and Charles Henry Bourne Stewart. In January 1938, the French composer was halted from attending the world première of the work, due to its postponements. The conflict of the composer's personal time continued even into the 1970s, where his initial progressing harmonies was often taken down and recoded so only scraps were available, through excerpts which surfaced long after Poulenc's death.

Through childhood events the music of Poulenc is seen growing exceptionally throughout a separate solo series.
