Indeksienvyölys, also known as index bloom or index avalanche, is a phenomenon that can occur in database systems. It describes a situation where a database query that initially performs well, often due to the use of an index, begins to degrade significantly in performance over time, sometimes to the point of system unresponsiveness. This degradation is usually triggered by a large number of updates, inserts, or deletes occurring on the indexed data.

When data is frequently modified, the index structures themselves become fragmented or bloated. For example, in a B-tree index, which is commonly used, frequent updates can lead to pages becoming sparsely populated or requiring frequent rebalancing operations. This increased fragmentation means that subsequent reads of the index have to traverse more data, leading to more disk I/O and slower query execution. The term "bloom" or "avalanche" refers to the cascading effect where the performance degradation accelerates as more modifications occur.

To mitigate indeksienvyölys, database administrators employ several strategies. Regular index maintenance operations, such as rebuilding or reorganizing indexes, are crucial. These operations help to defragment the index structure and remove any unused space, restoring optimal performance. Careful consideration of indexing strategies, such as choosing appropriate indexes for expected query patterns and avoiding over-indexing, can also help prevent the issue from arising in the first place.
