Inconception

Inconception refers to the failure of a fertilized egg to implant in the uterine lining, resulting in a pregnancy loss. This condition is also known as implantation failure. Implantation typically occurs around 6-12 days after fertilization, when the blastocyst (a cluster of cells) attaches to the endometrium, the inner lining of the uterus. If implantation fails, the fertilized egg will not develop into an embryo, and the menstrual cycle will resume as normal.

Inconception can occur for various reasons, including hormonal imbalances, uterine abnormalities, or problems with the fertilized egg itself. It is a common occurrence, with estimates suggesting that about 10-20% of known pregnancies may be lost due to implantation failure. The risk of inconception increases with maternal age, as the quality and quantity of eggs decrease with age.

Diagnosis of inconception is usually made through a combination of blood tests and ultrasound scans. If inconception is suspected, further diagnostic tests may be performed to identify any underlying causes. Treatment options for inconception are limited and may include hormonal therapies or assisted reproductive technologies, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), to improve the chances of a successful pregnancy.

Inconception should not be confused with miscarriage, which occurs when a fertilized egg implants and begins to develop into an embryo, but then the pregnancy is lost. Inconception is a silent loss, as it occurs before the woman is aware of being pregnant.
