Imprägnieren is a German term that translates to waterproofing or impregnation in English. It refers to the process of treating a material to make it resistant to water or other liquids. This is typically achieved by applying a liquid or semi-liquid substance that either penetrates the material or forms a protective layer on its surface. The goal is to prevent the absorption of moisture, which can lead to various undesirable effects such as swelling, staining, rot, or the degradation of the material's properties.

Various methods and substances are used for imprägnieren, depending on the material being treated and the desired level of protection. For textiles, common impregnating agents include silicone-based sprays, fluorocarbon polymers, or waxes. These treatments can enhance the water-repellency of clothing, tents, and outdoor gear. In construction, wood and stone are often impregnated to protect them from weathering and moisture damage. This might involve using oil-based preservatives, silanes, or siloxanes. Imprägnieren can also be applied to leather to preserve its suppleness and prevent water stains.
