Impedanssihäviö, also known as impedance mismatch loss or return loss, refers to the signal power that is reflected back towards the source due to a mismatch in impedance between two connected components in an electrical circuit or system. This phenomenon occurs when the impedance of a transmission line or a component connected to it does not match the characteristic impedance of the source or the load.

When there is an impedance mismatch, a portion of the incident signal energy is not absorbed by the load but instead bounces back. This reflected signal can interfere with the original signal, leading to signal degradation, reduced power transfer efficiency, and potentially oscillations in the system. The amount of power lost due to this reflection is quantified by the return loss, which is typically expressed in decibels (dB). A higher return loss value indicates a smaller reflection and thus a better impedance match.
