Impedanciaillesztés, a Hungarian term, translates to "impedance matching" in English. It is a fundamental concept in electrical engineering and physics that describes the process of making the input impedance of an electrical load or the output impedance of its corresponding signal source equal to the characteristic impedance of the transmission line connecting them. This matching is crucial for maximizing power transfer between the source and the load, and for minimizing signal reflections.

When impedance is not matched, a portion of the signal energy is reflected back towards the source. These reflections can cause several problems, including signal distortion, reduced power delivery, and potential damage to sensitive electronic components. In high-frequency applications, such as radio frequency (RF) and microwave circuits, impedance matching is particularly important due to the wavelengths of the signals involved. Transmission lines in these systems behave as wave guides, and reflections can significantly degrade performance.

The process of impedance matching typically involves the use of impedance matching networks. These networks are composed of passive components like inductors and capacitors, or sometimes active components, arranged in specific configurations to transform the impedance of the load to match the source or transmission line impedance. Common techniques include using quarter-wave transformers, stub tuners, and L-networks. The goal is to achieve a situation where the voltage and current waves traveling along the transmission line are in phase at the load, indicating that all energy has been absorbed by the load and none is reflected.
