Immunomagnetic

Immunomagnetic refers to a technique that utilizes magnetic beads or particles coated with antibodies to separate and purify specific biological targets from a complex mixture. These magnetic beads are functionalized with antibodies that have a high affinity for the target molecule, such as cells, proteins, or nucleic acids. When the antibody-coated beads are introduced to a sample containing the target, they bind to it.

The separation is achieved by applying an external magnetic field. The magnetic beads, now bound to the target, are attracted to the magnet, allowing them to be easily separated from the unbound components of the sample. The separated magnetic bead-target complexes can then be washed, eluted, or further processed for analysis or downstream applications. This method is non-destructive to the target and can be performed rapidly.

Immunomagnetic separation finds wide applications in various fields, including diagnostics, research, and biotechnology. It is used for cell sorting, isolation of rare cells like circulating tumor cells, purification of proteins and nucleic acids for molecular biology techniques, and in the development of diagnostic assays for detecting pathogens or biomarkers.
