Immunoglobulin preparations, also known as immune globulin therapy or gamma globulin therapy, are pharmaceutical products derived from the blood plasma of human donors. They consist of pooled antibodies, primarily immunoglobulin G (IgG), which play a crucial role in the human immune system by identifying and neutralizing foreign pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. These preparations are used to treat a variety of medical conditions.

There are two main categories of immunoglobulin preparations: intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) and subcutaneous immunoglobulin (SCIg). IVIg is administered intravenously, allowing for rapid delivery into the bloodstream. SCIg is injected under the skin, which can be done by patients at home and offers a more gradual absorption.

Immunoglobulin preparations are indicated for primary immunodeficiency disorders, where individuals have a weakened or absent immune system, making them susceptible to frequent infections. They are also used to treat secondary immunodeficiencies resulting from certain diseases or medical treatments like chemotherapy. Furthermore, these preparations can be beneficial in autoimmune diseases, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues, such as in certain neurological conditions or inflammatory disorders. In some cases, they are used for their neutralizing properties against specific toxins or as a post-exposure prophylaxis against infectious diseases like rabies or tetanus.
