The primary function of an ilmajähdytin is to dissipate heat absorbed by the refrigerant in the evaporator to the surrounding air. This process allows the refrigerant to change from a gaseous state to a liquid state, enabling the refrigeration cycle to continue.

The construction of an ilmajähdytin typically involves a series of tubes through which the hot refrigerant gas flows. These tubes are often finned to increase the surface area exposed to the air, thereby enhancing heat transfer. Fans are usually employed to force ambient air over the fins and tubes, accelerating the cooling and condensation process. The design and size of an ilmajähdytin are determined by the cooling capacity required for the specific application and the ambient temperature conditions. Factors such as fan speed, fin density, and refrigerant flow rate are critical for efficient operation.

The operation of an ilmajähdytin is crucial for maintaining the desired temperature in a cooled space. As the hot refrigerant vapor enters the ilmajähdytin, it transfers its heat to the cooler ambient air. This heat rejection causes the refrigerant to condense into a high-pressure liquid. The liquid refrigerant then proceeds to the expansion valve, where its pressure is reduced before entering the evaporator to absorb heat again. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the fins and checking fan operation, is important to ensure the optimal performance and longevity of the ilmajähdytin.
