Illuminationists

Illuminationists refers to a broad category of esoteric or mystical traditions that emphasize spiritual enlightenment or the attainment of divine knowledge. These movements often share a common goal of transcending ordinary consciousness and achieving a state of inner illumination, which is understood as a direct apprehension of truth or divinity. The term itself is derived from the Latin word "illuminare," meaning "to light up" or "to enlighten."

Throughout history, various groups and philosophies have been labeled as illuminationist. These include certain schools of Neoplatonism, Gnosticism, and various Sufi orders within Islam. In Christian mysticism, figures and movements that focused on direct experience of God or the reception of divine insights were also sometimes described as illuminationist. Within these traditions, practices such as meditation, contemplation, prayer, and the study of sacred texts are often employed to facilitate this inner transformation.
