Ikämäärityksessä is a Finnish term that translates to "age determination" or "dating" in English, commonly used in the context of archaeological and geological studies. It refers to the scientific processes employed to establish the age of artifacts, fossils, geological strata, or other materials. Various methods are utilized depending on the nature of the object and the time period in question.

Radiocarbon dating is a widely known technique for organic materials, measuring the decay of the carbon-14 isotope. This method is effective for materials up to approximately 50,000 years old. For older geological formations, radiometric dating methods employing isotopes like uranium-lead or potassium-argon are frequently used. These methods analyze the decay of long-lived radioactive isotopes within rocks and minerals.

Stratigraphy, the study of rock layers, also plays a crucial role. The principle of superposition states that in undisturbed rock sequences, older layers are found below younger layers, providing a relative chronological framework. Dendochronology, or tree-ring dating, is another valuable method for dating wooden artifacts or structures, by analyzing the unique patterns of annual tree growth rings. Paleomagnetism, which studies the Earth's past magnetic field reversals recorded in rocks, can also be used for dating. These diverse techniques, when applied appropriately, allow scientists to reconstruct timelines and understand the history of the Earth and its inhabitants.
