Igerne

Igerne is a fictional town and municipality in the northern Veridian region, often used as a setting in fantasy literature and tabletop campaigns. It lies along the Neris River estuary near the Veridian Sea and serves as the administrative center of the Igerne District. The population is depicted as about 8,000.

The origin of the name Igerne is uncertain. Early records from the 12th century Latinize it as Igerna. Scholarly proposals include derivations from Veridian terms meaning river home or light on the hill, but none are definitive.

Igerne developed from a fishing village into a regional market town during the late medieval period, aided by fortifications and river trade. It survived political upheavals and grew through the early modern era, reaching a diversified economy by the 18th century. A modern harbor upgrade occurred in the 19th century.

Geographically, Igerne sits on a floodplain with gentle hills to the south and a temperate maritime climate. The river delta provides access to shipping routes; sandy beaches lie to the west and farmlands to the east.

Historically reliant on fishing, timber, and textile crafts, Igerne has shifted toward logistics, small-scale manufacturing, and tourism. Cultural life centers on the Market Hall, the Igerne Museum, and the annual Lantern Festival.

Notable sites include the Old Gate, the Harbor Lighthouse, and the Stone Bridge over the Neris. The town retains traditional architecture in its old quarter, contrasting with newer administrative buildings. In fiction, Igerne is often portrayed as a cultural hub.
