IgMmediated

IgMmediated refers to immune responses that are primarily driven by Immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies. IgM is the first antibody class produced by B cells during a primary immune response, making it a crucial early indicator of recent infection or exposure to a foreign antigen. It exists as a pentamer, a structure composed of five individual antibody units linked together. This pentameric form gives IgM a high avidity, meaning it can bind to multiple antigen sites simultaneously, making it very effective at neutralizing pathogens and activating the complement system.

The presence of IgM antibodies against a specific pathogen or antigen typically signifies an acute or recent infection. As the immune response matures, B cells switch to producing other antibody classes, such as IgG, which then become the dominant antibodies. Therefore, detecting IgM is often used in diagnostic tests to differentiate between current and past infections. For example, in serological tests for various viral or bacterial diseases, the presence of IgM antibodies, along with the absence or low levels of IgG, strongly suggests an active or very recent infection. Conversely, the presence of IgG alone usually indicates a past infection or successful vaccination. The IgM response is particularly important in activating the classical complement pathway, which can lead to the lysis of bacteria and other pathogens.
