IduMishmi

The Idu Mishmi are an indigenous ethnic group of Arunachal Pradesh, India. They are one of the Mishmi peoples, traditionally inhabiting the Dibang Valley and adjoining areas of Lohit and Upper Dibang Valley districts near the India–China border.

Language and classification: The Idu Mishmi speak the Idu Mishmi language, a Tibeto-Burman language within the broader Sino-Tibetan family. The community is recognized as a Scheduled Tribe in India, which affords certain constitutional protections and affirmative-action programs.

Society and culture: Traditionally, the Idu Mishmi have lived in agrarian and forest-based communities, with cultivation and forest products forming the basis of the economy. They are organized around kinship ties and clans, with social practices that reflect a close connection to the natural environment. The cultural repertoire includes customary rituals and festivals tied to agricultural cycles, seasonal changes, and community life.
