Idtartamhatározók

Időtartamhatározók are a category of adverbials in Hungarian grammar that indicate the duration of an action or state. They answer questions such as milyen ideig? vagy hány ideig? and specify how long something lasts. The most common forms are built from a time-expression plus a duration marker, typically át or -ig.

With the marker át, the phrase denotes the span during which the action occurs: például két órán át dolgoztam (I worked for two hours), egész napig vártam (I waited all day). The -ig form marks the limit up to which the action lasts or the period it covers: például két óráig tartott a vizsga (the exam lasted up to two hours) or a kiállítás két hétig tartott (the exhibition lasted for two weeks). Other frequent durational expressions include egész nap, napokon át, hónapokon át, több napon át.

Időtartamhatározók typically function as adverbials that modify the verb and can appear before or after the verb in a clause, as in Két órán át dolgoztam or Egész napig vártam. They are contrasted with időpont határozók, which specify a point in time (például ma, most, jövő hétfőn), and with other time-related adverbials that express frequency or general timing.

In some grammars, a durational phrase can be analyzed as a temporal object (időtartam-tárgy) when it directly relates to a transitive verb. Examples below illustrate common usage: Két órát aludtam; két órán át dolgoztam; egész napig dolgoztam; három hónapon át zajlott a projekt.
