Identitätsgleichheit, often translated as identity or sameness, is a fundamental concept in philosophy and logic. It posits that something is identical to itself and to nothing else. This idea is captured by the law of identity, a cornerstone of classical logic, which states that for any proposition P, P is true if and only if P is true. In simpler terms, an object possesses the exact same properties at a given time.

The concept of identity can be explored through various lenses. In metaphysics, it touches upon the persistence of objects over time. For instance, is a ship the same ship after all its planks have been replaced? Philosophers debate whether identity is based on material continuity, form, or some other essential characteristic. In mathematics, identity is crucial, as seen in the identity element of an operation, such as zero in addition or one in multiplication, which leaves the other operand unchanged.

In everyday language, we use "identical" to mean exactly the same. However, philosophical discussions often delve into the nuances of what constitutes sameness, especially when considering objects that change or evolve.
