Idealisten

Idealisten is a German term that denotes people who adhere to, or advocate for, certain ideals—typically ethical, political, or cultural ideals. In everyday usage it describes someone guided by principles rather than by strictly practical considerations, and it can carry either positive or critical connotations depending on context.

In philosophy, the term is linked to idealism, the view that ideas or mental constructs play a fundamental role in shaping reality. German philosophy has a long tradition of idealism, from Kant’s transcendental idealism to the absolute idealism of Hegel and the later developments of Fichte and Schelling. Accordingly, discussions about Idealisten may refer to adherents of these theoretical positions, as well as to those who apply idealist concepts in ethics or political theory.

Historically and in contemporary discourse, the label is used descriptively and evaluatively. It can describe reformers or activists pursuing noble, sometimes utopian aims, and it is occasionally employed pejoratively to contrast with pragmatism or realism.

Beyond philosophy, Idealisten has appeared as a name or self-designation for various German- and Austrian-language groups, magazines, or initiatives. These uses do not imply a single unified movement, but rather reflect a broader cultural and intellectual appeal of the idea of pursuing ideals.
