Ibadans

Ibadans are residents of Ibadan, the capital and largest city of Oyo State in southwestern Nigeria. Ibadan is one of the country’s largest urban centers and serves as a major administrative, commercial, and cultural hub.

History: Ibadan originated as a cluster of Yoruba towns and villages. It grew rapidly in the 19th century as a center of trade, agriculture, and political influence within the region, becoming a prominent city in the Oyo Empire and later a key colonial and post-colonial center. The city is traditionally led by the Olubadan, a chieftaincy title that reflects its historic status.

Demography and culture: Ibadans are predominantly Yoruba, with diverse communities from across Nigeria and beyond. The city hosts bustling markets, educational institutions, and cultural festivals. Yoruba language and music are widely represented, and the city’s architecture ranges from historic colonial-era buildings to dense residential neighborhoods.

Education and institutions: Ibadan is home to the University of Ibadan, Nigeria’s oldest degree-granting university, established in 1948 as University College Ibadan and gaining full university status in 1963. The city also hosts polytechnics and colleges that serve the region.
