IUPAC nomenclature refers to the systematic naming of chemical compounds according to the rules established by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). The goal of IUPAC nomenclature is to provide a unique and unambiguous name for every chemical substance, facilitating clear communication within the scientific community. These rules are extensive and cover organic and inorganic compounds, polymers, and biomolecules.

For organic compounds, nomenclature generally follows a hierarchical system based on the longest carbon chain (parent chain), functional groups, and substituents. Prefixes and suffixes are used to indicate the type and position of these components. For example, the length of the carbon chain determines the base name (e.g., methane for one carbon, ethane for two). Functional groups, like alcohols or carboxylic acids, are indicated by suffixes. Substituents attached to the parent chain are named and their positions are specified with numbers.

Inorganic nomenclature follows similar principles, often based on the constituent elements and their oxidation states. Cation and anion names are combined to form the compound name. For instance, the compound formed from sodium and chlorine is named sodium chloride. Complex compounds, such as coordination compounds, have their own specific naming conventions. The IUPAC nomenclature system is continually updated to reflect new discoveries and evolving chemical understanding.
