IRkaukoohjaimissa, often shortened to IR remote controls, are devices used for wireless operation of electronic equipment. They utilize infrared (IR) light signals to transmit commands. These signals are invisible to the human eye but are detected by a sensor on the receiving device. Common applications include televisions, DVD players, sound systems, and air conditioners.

The operation of an IR remote is straightforward. When a button is pressed, a microchip within the remote generates a unique code corresponding to that button's function. This code is then transmitted as a series of light pulses by an infrared LED. The receiving device, equipped with an IR receiver, decodes these pulses and executes the requested command.

While widely used, IR remote controls have limitations. They require a direct line of sight between the remote and the receiver, as the infrared signal can be blocked by obstacles. The effective range is also limited. Furthermore, multiple IR devices can sometimes interfere with each other if they are operating on similar frequencies or if commands are sent simultaneously. Despite these drawbacks, their simplicity, low cost, and widespread compatibility have ensured their continued prevalence in consumer electronics. Newer technologies like radio frequency (RF) or Bluetooth remotes offer advantages such as the ability to operate through walls and greater range, but IR remains a standard for many applications.
