IRCnet

IRCnet is an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) network. It is one of the oldest continuously operating IRC networks and has historically had a strong presence in Europe, with servers spread across multiple countries.

In the late 1990s, operators in Europe formed IRCnet as a regional alternative to EFnet, aiming for different policies and server management. The split led to an independent network that grew to serve a global user base.

IRCnet uses the standard IRC protocol and a distributed set of servers that connect to form a single network. Users connect with IRC clients to a nearby IRCnet server and can move between servers as needed. The network relies on registration and moderation systems managed by on-network operators to enforce policies and respond to abuse.

Governance is decentralized, with decisions coordinated among administrators of member servers. Enforcement of rules and handling of outages or misconduct is carried out by network operators and accredited staff.

As of the 2020s, IRCnet remains active and is a part of the broader IRC ecosystem, alongside other networks such as EFnet, DALnet, and QuakeNet. It is commonly used by communities in Europe and beyond.
