IPvideoövervakning, also known as IP surveillance or network video surveillance, refers to the digital video and audio surveillance of a business or area. Unlike traditional analog CCTV systems, IP video surveillance systems use Internet Protocol (IP) to transmit video and control data. This allows for greater flexibility and scalability, as cameras can be connected to a network, enabling remote access and management.

IP cameras capture video and encode it into digital streams. These streams are then transmitted over a network, typically an Ethernet network, to a Network Video Recorder (NVR) or directly to a computer for storage and viewing. This digital nature allows for higher resolution video, advanced features like motion detection and analytics, and easier integration with other IT systems.

The advantages of IP video surveillance include improved image quality, remote accessibility from any internet-connected device, the ability to scale systems easily by adding more cameras to the network, and often lower installation costs due to the use of existing network infrastructure. IP systems also support bidirectional audio, allowing for communication between the monitoring station and the camera location.

Common applications for IP video surveillance include security for homes and businesses, traffic monitoring, retail loss prevention, and industrial process monitoring. The technology continues to evolve with advancements in video compression, artificial intelligence for intelligent analytics, and cloud-based storage solutions.
