IPkoodilla

IPkoodilla is a Finnish term used to describe products that bear an IP rating, indicating their level of protection against intrusion by solids and liquids. The IP code is defined by the international standard IEC 60529 and is widely used for electronics, enclosures, and housings. In practice, IPkoodilla labeling helps manufacturers communicate robustness and suitability for specific environments, and it assists buyers in comparing products.

The IP code consists of two digits. The first digit refers to protection against solids (dust, dirt, and intrusion of foreign objects) and ranges from 0 to 6, with higher numbers indicating greater protection. The second digit refers to protection against liquids (water) and ranges from 0 to 8, with higher numbers indicating greater resistance and, in some cases, submersion capabilities. Examples commonly encountered are IP54 (dust-protected and splash water resistant), IP65 (dust-tight and protected against jets of water), IP67 (dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion), and IP68 (dust-tight with prolonged immersion under specified conditions).

Applications of IPkoodilla labeling span consumer electronics used outdoors, industrial equipment, electrical enclosures, lighting, and kitchen or bathroom devices. The code helps manufacturers meet regulatory expectations and assists consumers and service providers in assessing suitability for exposure to dust, rain, splashing water, or immersion.

Limitations include that an IP rating does not address impact resistance, temperature tolerance, chemical exposure, or long-term durability beyond the tested conditions. It also does not guarantee functionality in real-world scenarios that exceed the standard tests.
