IPBezeichnung is a German term used in information technology to denote the human-readable label assigned to an IP address for documentation, asset management, and network administration. It is not a technical protocol or standard, but a descriptive designation that helps identify the device, service, or purpose associated with a given IP address.

The primary purpose of an IPBezeichnung is to provide clarity beyond the numeric IP address. In network inventories, IPAM systems, CMDBs, and network diagrams, the designation makes it easier for administrators to recognize what an address represents, such as the device type, role, location, or environment. For example, a designation might read as “PRD-Web-01” or “DB01-10.0.1.15,” combining role, instance, or location with a reference to the IP. This labeling supports faster troubleshooting, change management, and capacity planning.

Conventions for IPBezeichnung vary between organizations but typically emphasize consistency, readability, and non-sensitive naming. Common practices include encoding device role (server, router, printer), site or room (RZ1, HU-Office), and environment (PRD, DEV) in a compact form. It is important to distinguish the IPBezeichnung from the numeric IP address itself and to keep mappings in a centralized repository to avoid drift.
