IPAFeatures

IPAFeatures is a structured catalog of phonetic features associated with the symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). It provides a standardized, machine-readable framework for describing the articulatory and acoustic properties of consonants and vowels, enabling cross-language comparison, phonological analysis, and computational processing. The project aims to support researchers, educators, and developers in linguistics, speech technology, and language documentation.

The feature system distinguishes consonantal and vocalic properties. Consonants are described by place of articulation (labial, coronal, dorsal, uvular, glottal, etc.), manner (stops, fricatives, affricates, nasals, liquids, approximants), voicing, and secondary features such as aspiration, nasalization, creaky or breathy phonation, and rounding when relevant. Vowels are characterized by height (close, mid, open), backness (front, central, back), rounding, tenseness, nasalization, and pharyngealization as needed. Features are encoded as binary or multivalued attributes, compatible with feature geometry models and phonological rule representations.

Applications: data enables automatic phoneme classification, feature-based alignments in speech recognition, and phonology teaching tools. It supports data interoperability in corpora, typology databases, and TTS systems by providing a common descriptor schema for IPA symbols, including diacritics and suprasegmental modifiers when present.

Limitations and maintenance: IPAFeatures acknowledges that some IPA symbols reflect allophonic variation rather than a single feature set, and that diacritics can alter features. The catalog is regularly updated to align with the latest IPA revisions and scholarly consensus. Access is provided under an open license, with documentation and reference mappings to IPA charts and feature constraint equations.
