ICNCPregler

ICNCPregler refers to the set of naming rules and guidelines for cultivated plants within the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP). It governs how cultivated taxa are named and organized, including cultivars, cultivar groups, and other formal categories used in horticulture and floriculture. The rules are maintained by the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) and are overseen by committees associated with the International Botanical Congress.

The code distinguishes between nomenclature for natural taxa, which is governed by the ICN, and nomenclature for cultivated plants, which is governed by the ICNCP. A cultivar name is the formal epithet that follows the genus and species designation and is placed in single quotation marks, for example Rosa hybrida 'Peace'. Cultivar names must be unique within a genus and are not italicized. In addition to cultivars, the ICNCP regulates higher categories such as Groups, Subgroups, Classes, and Series used to classify cultivated plants.

For valid publication, new cultivar names generally require effective publication in a recognized source and must be accompanied by a description or reference to a type or representative plant. Many plant groups have International Cultivar Registration Authorities (ICRAs) that assist in registering and recording cultivar names to prevent duplication and ensure consistent usage.

ICNCPregler is periodically revised and published by ISHS to reflect developments in botanical nomenclature and community practice. It operates in concert with the broader ICN framework and aligns with national and international standards governing cultivated plant naming and classification.
