IBOC

IBOC stands for In-Band On-Channel. It is a digital radio broadcasting technology that allows for the transmission of a digital audio signal alongside a traditional analog FM or AM signal on the same frequency. This means that an IBOC broadcast can be received by both digital-capable radios and existing analog radios, though the digital signal offers enhanced audio quality and additional data services.

The primary advantage of IBOC is its backward compatibility. Listeners with newer digital radios can receive a higher fidelity audio stream, often with multiple channels or a program guide. Those with older analog radios will continue to receive the standard analog broadcast without interruption. IBOC systems are designed to minimize interference between the digital and analog signals.

The development of IBOC was driven by the desire to improve the audio quality of radio broadcasts and introduce new digital features without requiring a complete replacement of existing radio receivers. This approach aimed to facilitate a smoother transition to digital broadcasting for both broadcasters and consumers. Different standards and implementations of IBOC exist, with some variations in how the digital and analog signals are multiplexed and transmitted.
