Húgycsatéterek, or urinary catheters, are slender tubes inserted into the bladder to drain urine. They are a common medical device used for various reasons. A catheter typically consists of a tube made of silicone, latex, or PVC, with a balloon near the tip that can be inflated once inside the bladder to keep the catheter in place.

The primary use of a urinary catheter is to help individuals who cannot empty their bladder naturally. This can be due to conditions such as urinary retention, enlarged prostate, neurological damage, or after surgery. Catheters are also used to monitor urine output accurately in critically ill patients or those undergoing surgery.

There are several types of urinary catheters. Indwelling catheters, also known as Foley catheters, are left in place for extended periods. Intermittent catheters are inserted and removed each time the bladder needs to be emptied. External catheters, often called condom catheters, are worn by men and collect urine externally.

Insertion of a urinary catheter is a medical procedure performed by trained healthcare professionals. Proper technique and sterile equipment are essential to minimize the risk of infection, which is a common complication associated with catheter use. Patients using catheters are advised to maintain good hygiene and report any signs of infection, such as fever, pain, or cloudy urine.
