Høydeproblemer, also known as altitude sickness, refers to a set of symptoms that occur when a person ascends to a high altitude. These symptoms are caused by the body's response to the decreased oxygen levels at higher elevations. The most common symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, shortness of breath, and loss of appetite. In severe cases, altitude sickness can lead to more serious conditions such as high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) and high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE).

The body's response to altitude sickness is primarily due to the reduced partial pressure of oxygen in the air. At higher altitudes, the atmospheric pressure decreases, which means there is less oxygen available for the body to absorb. The body compensates by increasing the production of red blood cells, which carry oxygen, and by increasing the heart rate to pump more blood. However, these responses can be insufficient to meet the body's demands, leading to the symptoms of altitude sickness.

Prevention and treatment of høydeproblemer involve acclimatization, which is the process of allowing the body to adjust to the lower oxygen levels over time. This can be achieved by ascending gradually and allowing the body time to adapt. Medications such as acetazolamide and dexamethasone can also be used to treat altitude sickness, but they should be used with caution and under medical supervision. In severe cases, descent to a lower altitude may be necessary to prevent more serious complications.
