Höyrylauduttimet, often translated as steam irons, are household appliances used for pressing clothes. They work by utilizing a combination of heat and steam to smooth out wrinkles and creases from fabric. The appliance typically consists of a heated soleplate, a water reservoir, and a mechanism for generating and releasing steam.

The soleplate, usually made of metal, is heated to a temperature suitable for various fabric types. This heat relaxes the fibers of the cloth. Simultaneously, water is heated within the reservoir, producing steam. The steam is then expelled through small holes in the soleplate, penetrating the fabric and further aiding in wrinkle removal. Many steam irons also feature a spray function, which releases a burst of water directly onto the fabric for tackling stubborn wrinkles.

The intensity of the steam and the temperature of the soleplate can usually be adjusted depending on the material being ironed. Delicate fabrics require lower heat and less steam, while more robust materials can withstand higher temperatures and more steam. Modern steam irons often incorporate safety features such as automatic shut-off to prevent overheating or accidental burns.

The primary purpose of a steam iron is to maintain the appearance of clothing by removing wrinkles, giving garments a crisp and neat finish. They are an essential tool in many households for garment care.
