Höyrydesinfektio, also known as steam sterilization, is a method of disinfection and sterilization that uses steam under pressure to kill microorganisms. This process is highly effective against a broad spectrum of microbes, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores. The high temperature and moisture of the steam denature essential proteins and enzymes within the microorganisms, rendering them inactive.

The most common device used for steam sterilization is an autoclave. Autoclaves operate by creating a sealed chamber where steam is introduced at elevated temperatures, typically 121°C (250°F) or 134°C (273°F), and pressure. The pressure ensures that the steam reaches temperatures above its normal boiling point, thus increasing its sterilization efficacy. The duration of the sterilization cycle depends on the temperature used, the type of material being sterilized, and the specific autoclave model.

Höyrydesinfektio is widely used in healthcare settings, such as hospitals and dental clinics, to sterilize medical instruments, laboratory equipment, and other heat-stable materials. It is also employed in various industries, including food processing, pharmaceuticals, and waste management, for disinfection and sterilization purposes. The advantages of steam sterilization include its effectiveness, speed, low cost, and environmental friendliness, as it does not require the use of harsh chemicals. However, it is only suitable for materials that can withstand high temperatures and moisture; heat-sensitive items may require alternative sterilization methods.
