Högaltitudinstrument are scientific instruments designed to operate in or collect data from high-altitude environments. These environments typically refer to the upper atmosphere of planets, including Earth, or other celestial bodies. The primary challenge for instruments operating at high altitudes is the extreme conditions, such as very low temperatures, reduced atmospheric pressure, and high levels of radiation.

Instruments used for high-altitude research can be broadly categorized by their deployment method. These include balloons, aircraft, rockets, and satellites. High-altitude balloons, such as weather balloons, carry instruments for atmospheric research, meteorological data collection, and sometimes cosmic ray studies. Specialized aircraft, like stratospheric research planes, are equipped to fly at altitudes exceeding 20,000 meters, enabling in-situ measurements of atmospheric composition and dynamics. Rockets are employed for sub-orbital flights that can reach altitudes of hundreds of kilometers, allowing for brief but comprehensive studies of the upper atmosphere and near-space environment. Satellites orbit Earth at much higher altitudes and are equipped with a wide range of sensors to observe the planet's atmosphere, climate, and other phenomena over extended periods.

Shielding against radiation is also a critical consideration, especially for instruments intended for prolonged exposure or operation in space.
