Hõõrdetegur is a dimensionless scalar value used to quantify the friction between two surfaces in contact. It represents the ratio of the force of friction to the normal force pressing the surfaces together. A higher coefficient of friction indicates that more force is required to overcome the friction and initiate or maintain motion between the surfaces. Conversely, a lower coefficient signifies less resistance to movement.

There are two primary types of friction considered when discussing the coefficient. The coefficient of static friction, often denoted as μs, applies when the surfaces are at rest relative to each other. It represents the maximum friction force that must be overcome to start sliding. Once motion begins, the friction force generally decreases, and the coefficient of kinetic friction, denoted as μk, becomes relevant. Kinetic friction is the force that opposes the motion of surfaces that are already sliding against each other. Typically, the coefficient of kinetic friction is lower than the coefficient of static friction.

The value of the coefficient of friction depends on the nature of the two materials in contact, their surface roughness, and environmental conditions such as temperature and the presence of lubricants. For example, rubber on dry asphalt has a high coefficient of friction, providing good traction, while ice on ice has a very low coefficient, resulting in slippery conditions. Engineers and physicists use the coefficient of friction extensively in calculations related to mechanics, design, and the prediction of how objects will behave under various forces.
