Hængebroer

Hængebroer, sometimes referred to as suspension bridges, are a type of bridge in which the deck is hung below suspension cables on vertical supports. The primary structural elements of a hængebro are the main cables, which are typically made of steel or other strong materials, draped between towers or abutments. These main cables carry the majority of the load.

The deck of a hængebro is suspended from the main cables by means of hangers, which are vertical cables or rods. These hangers transfer the weight of the deck and any traffic on it to the main cables. The main cables are anchored at their ends to the ground or to massive anchorages, which resist the tension in the cables and ensure the bridge's stability.

Hængebroer are known for their ability to span long distances, making them suitable for crossing wide rivers, bays, or valleys. Their construction allows for a relatively lightweight deck compared to other bridge types of similar span. The inherent flexibility of the design, however, means that hængebroer can be susceptible to wind-induced oscillations, which can be mitigated through various engineering techniques like stiffening trusses or aerodynamic shaping of the deck. Famous examples include the Golden Gate Bridge and the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge.
