Hændelser

Händelser is a Swedish term meaning events or occurrences. In everyday language it covers anything that happens, from personal experiences and incidents to significant happenings in history, politics, or culture. The word is neutral and widely used in media, education, and conversation to describe real occurrences as they unfold or are reported.

In probability theory and statistics, händelse has a precise technical meaning: a subset of the sample space consisting of possible outcomes. An event is said to occur when the observed outcome belongs to that subset. For example, when rolling a six-sided die, the event “getting an even number” corresponds to {2, 4, 6} and has a probability of 1/2. Events can be combined using logical operations: the union represents “A or B occurs,” the intersection represents “A and B occur,” and the complement represents outcomes outside a given event.

In other fields, händelser are used to describe notable occurrences in history, journalism, and culture, as well as to denote actions that trigger responses in computing and information systems. In event-driven programming, for instance, user actions or system messages generate events that are handled by specific routines. Across contexts, händelser help organize understanding of what happens and how different outcomes relate to one another.
