Hårmatrixen

Hårmatrixen, often referred to as the hair matrix, is a crucial component of the hair follicle responsible for hair growth. It is a population of actively dividing cells located at the base of the hair follicle, within the hair bulb. These cells are undifferentiated and possess stem cell-like properties.

The primary function of the hårmatrix is to produce keratinocytes, the cells that differentiate to form the various structures of the hair shaft, including the cuticle, cortex, and medulla. This process of cell division and differentiation is known as keratinization. As new keratinocytes are produced in the matrix, they push older cells upwards, forming the growing hair shaft.

The hårmatrix is also influenced by various signaling pathways and growth factors that regulate the hair growth cycle, also known as the anagen, catagen, and telogen phases. Hormones, particularly androgens, play a significant role in the activity of the hårmatrix, influencing hair thickness and growth rate. Damage to the hårmatrix, whether from internal factors like genetics or external factors like harsh treatments, can lead to hair loss or thinning. Understanding the hårmatrix is essential for comprehending hair biology and developing treatments for conditions affecting hair growth.
