Hårmatrix refers to the germinative cells located at the base of the hair follicle. These cells are undifferentiated and possess the ability to rapidly divide and differentiate, forming the various components of the hair shaft. The hårmatrix is crucial for hair growth and regeneration. It contains melanocytes, which are responsible for producing melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color.

The hair follicle itself is a complex structure embedded in the dermis, and the hårmatrix is the innermost layer of the bulb at the very bottom of this structure. Blood vessels supply nutrients and oxygen to the hårmatrix, fueling its continuous cell division. As new cells are produced in the hårmatrix, they are pushed upwards, differentiating into keratinized cells that eventually form the visible hair shaft. This process is cyclical, involving periods of growth (anagen), transition (catagen), and rest (telogen). The health and activity of the hårmatrix directly influence the rate of hair growth, hair thickness, and overall hair quality. Factors such as genetics, nutrition, and hormonal balance can affect the function of the hårmatrix. Damage or dysfunction of the hårmatrix can lead to hair loss or thinning.
