Häviöpakkaus refers to a type of data compression where some data is lost during the compression process. This is in contrast to lossless compression, which allows for perfect reconstruction of the original data. Häviöpakkaus is typically used for multimedia files such as images, audio, and video, where the loss of some information is often imperceptible to the human senses.

The primary advantage of häviöpakkaus is its ability to achieve much higher compression ratios compared to lossless methods. This means that the compressed files are significantly smaller, which is beneficial for storage and transmission. Common examples of häviöpakkaus algorithms include JPEG for images, MP3 for audio, and various codecs for video like H.264 or HEVC.

The effectiveness of häviöpakkaus relies on psychoacoustic and psychovisual models that exploit limitations in human perception.
