Hätäpäästöventtiilejä, known in English as emergency relief valves or pressure relief valves, are critical safety devices designed to protect pressure vessels, piping systems, and other equipment from overpressure conditions. They automatically open to release excess pressure when it exceeds a predetermined safe limit, preventing potential explosions or structural damage.

The primary function of an emergency relief valve is to prevent catastrophic failure. Overpressure can occur due to various reasons, such as process upsets, external fire, blocked outlets, or thermal expansion. Without a properly functioning relief valve, the accumulating pressure could exceed the design limits of the equipment, leading to dangerous ruptures.

These valves are typically spring-loaded or pilot-operated. Spring-loaded valves use a calibrated spring to keep the valve closed. When the system pressure reaches the set pressure, it overcomes the spring force, opening the valve and allowing the fluid or gas to escape. Pilot-operated valves use a small pilot valve to control the main valve. They are often used in applications requiring higher accuracy, faster response, or the ability to handle very high pressures.

Emergency relief valves are installed on a wide range of equipment in industries such as petrochemical, chemical, oil and gas, power generation, and manufacturing. Their correct sizing, installation, and regular maintenance are crucial for ensuring the safety of personnel and the integrity of industrial facilities. Periodic testing and inspection are standard procedures to verify their operational readiness.
