Háttértárolás

Háttértárolás, a Hungarian term, translates to "background storage" or "secondary storage" in English. It refers to non-volatile storage devices that are used to hold data and programs when they are not actively being used by the computer's main processor. Unlike primary storage (like RAM), which is volatile and loses its contents when power is turned off, háttértárolás retains data even without power.

Common examples of háttértárolás include hard disk drives (HDDs), solid-state drives (SSDs), USB flash drives, and optical media like CDs and DVDs. These devices are crucial for storing the operating system, applications, user files, and any other data that needs to be persistently available. The speed of access to háttértárolás is generally slower than primary storage, but it offers much larger capacities at a lower cost per bit.

The role of háttértárolás is to provide a permanent repository for information, allowing users and the system to load programs and data into the faster primary memory when needed for execution. This separation of immediate access memory from long-term storage is fundamental to modern computing, enabling efficient management of resources and the persistence of digital information.
