Hyponitrous

Hyponitrous acid, also known as dinitrous acid, is an unstable inorganic compound with the chemical formula H2N2O2. It is a weak acid that exists in two tautomeric forms: one with a hydrogen-nitrogen-nitrogen-oxygen-hydrogen structure and another with a hydrogen-oxygen-nitrogen-nitrogen-hydrogen structure. The former is more stable. Hyponitrous acid is typically prepared by the reaction of nitrous acid with hydroxylamine or by the reduction of nitrites. It is an oily liquid that decomposes readily, especially when heated or in the presence of acids or bases, yielding nitrous oxide and water. The salts of hyponitrous acid are known as hyponitrites. These salts are also generally unstable and can decompose explosively. Hyponitrous acid and its derivatives have limited practical applications due to their inherent instability. Research into its properties continues, but its reactivity and decomposition pathways make it a challenging substance to work with.
