Hypertekstilinkkejä, often translated as hypertext links, are fundamental components of the World Wide Web and other hypermedia systems. They are a mechanism that allows users to navigate between different pieces of information, typically from a document to another document or resource. When a user clicks on a hyperlink, they are directed to a new location, which could be a webpage, an image, a video, a downloadable file, or even a specific section within the same document.

The visual representation of a hyperlink on a webpage is commonly a piece of text that is underlined and often displayed in a different color than the surrounding content. Images can also function as hyperlinks, where clicking on the image triggers the navigation. The underlying technology behind hyperlinks involves Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) or Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs), which specify the address of the target resource.

Hypertext, and by extension hyperlinks, revolutionized information access by breaking away from the linear structure of traditional media like books. This non-linear, interconnected nature allows for a more dynamic and user-driven exploration of information. The concept of hypertext was first envisioned by Vannevar Bush in the 1940s and later developed by Ted Nelson, with its practical implementation largely realized through the development of the World Wide Web by Tim Berners-Lee.
