Hyperlinkkiä, often simply referred to as a link, is a reference to data that a reader can follow by clicking or tapping. It is the fundamental building block of the World Wide Web, enabling navigation between web pages and other resources. When you click on a hyperlink, your web browser is instructed to retrieve and display the linked content. This content can be another webpage, an image, a video, a document, or even an email address. The text or image that serves as a hyperlink is called anchor text.

Hyperlinks are created using a specific markup language, most commonly HTML (HyperText Markup Language). In HTML, a hyperlink is defined by the anchor tag `<a>` with the `href` attribute specifying the destination URL. For example, `<a href="https://www.example.com">Visit Example</a>` would create a link with the anchor text "Visit Example" that points to the website "https://www.example.com".

There are various types of hyperlinks. Internal hyperlinks link to other pages within the same website, facilitating site navigation. External hyperlinks link to pages on different websites. Anchor links, also known as fragment identifiers, link to a specific section within a single webpage, identified by an ID attribute.

The strategic use of hyperlinks is crucial for website design, search engine optimization (SEO), and user experience. Well-placed and relevant hyperlinks help users discover information, engage with content, and navigate the vast expanse of the internet efficiently. The concept of the hyperlink was first described by Ted Nelson in 1965 and was a foundational element in the development of hypertext systems.
