Hyophorbe

Hyophorbe is a genus of palms in the family Arecaceae. The genus is native to the Mascarene Islands, a group of islands in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar. These islands are known for their high levels of endemism, and Hyophorbe palms are no exception. The genus currently contains four recognized species, all of which are critically endangered in the wild.

The palms in the genus Hyophorbe are characterized by their slender, often bottle-shaped trunks, which can grow up to 20 meters in height. The leaves are pinnately compound and arching. The inflorescences are branched and bear small, creamy white flowers. The fruits are typically small, ovoid, and black when ripe.

Common names for species in this genus include the Mascarene palm, spindle palm, and bottle palm. These palms are popular ornamental plants in tropical and subtropical regions, valued for their unique appearance. However, their conservation status is a significant concern due to habitat loss and degradation on their native islands. Efforts are underway to protect their remaining natural populations and to cultivate them ex situ to prevent their extinction. The genus name Hyophorbe is derived from Greek words meaning "bearing fruit."
