Hydroviscous

Hydroviscous refers to a type of drive system that utilizes a fluid, typically oil, to transmit power. In a hydroviscous drive, a variable-displacement pump is driven by an engine or motor. This pump pressurizes a fluid, which is then directed to a hydraulic motor or a series of hydraulic motors. The speed of the output shaft is controlled by varying the displacement of the pump or by regulating the flow of fluid to the motor. This allows for smooth and stepless speed changes across a wide range.

These drives are known for their ability to provide high torque at low speeds and for their precise control capabilities. They are often used in applications where variable speed and smooth acceleration are critical. Examples include marine propulsion systems, industrial machinery like conveyors and crushers, and some types of construction equipment. The fluid in the system also acts as a lubricant and a cooling medium, contributing to the longevity and reliability of the components.

Hydroviscous drives can offer advantages over mechanical transmissions in certain situations due to their inherent shock absorption capabilities and the absence of rigid mechanical connections, which can reduce wear and tear on other parts of the system. However, they can also be less efficient than some mechanical transmissions, especially at higher speeds, due to fluid shear losses. Maintenance typically involves regular checks and changes of the hydraulic fluid and filters.
